Short version:

If you want something that you created back in the 1990's removed from this site, let us know. We will remove it and protect (lock-out) that article from being added again. You have the right as the original author to choose.

The contents of TheVid.com are published under Creative Commons "Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported". Here's what that means: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/

In other words, much like the original issues, you must attribute. Also, please share with friends but don't sell it or republish it.

More philosophy:

The Vid's original mission in 1990 was to provide an open forum. Long before the birth of the web, user forums, social networking, crowdsourcing and Wikipedia, The Vid allowed anyone to contribute as long as they were willing to put their name on it. At that time in the 1990's, The Vid staff tried something unusual. Every article author put not only their name but their phone number as well. That way, if a reader had a problem with an article, or just want to to tlak more about it, they could call the author to discuss it. There were only a few noted exceptions to this policy, in extreme cases which required anonymity for safety.

And there was the mysterious secret identity of the Wizard of Vid... finally revealed 17 years later!

We live in a different world today. Privacy is an important concern, and the internet has brought a new need for anonymity in certain situations. But the net also brings a new opportunity for collaboration. TheVid.com is a wiki, built by a team effort and open to editing. But to edit you must sign up as a registered user. (This is to prevent spam bots from defacing the site.)

So in a sense, because any edits to this site are attributed, The Vid has returned to its roots. But... we don't suggest posting your phone number.
